Is watching a movie with parts that are against the catholic faith considered a sin?

June 20th, 2009 by admin

I am living with a roommate and every time we get a movie he looks it up on a website to see if it is alright to watch. As long as we know that the parts in the movie are morally wrong, is it really that bad?

It depends.

The First Commandment requires us to nourish and protect our faith with prudence and vigilance, and to reject everything that is opposed to it.

If one is not strong in their faith then watching a movie that attacks that faith would break the First Commandment.

With love in Christ.

The only immoral actions are those which hurt others.

There's nothing immoral about watching movies.

Probably, that is what cults try to do. They restrict any contradictory opinion.

It all depends on what you mean when you say it's "Against the Catholic Faith." For example - there are movies out there who's only reason for being is to attack Catholic Dogma. "The Da Vinci Code", "Angels and Demons" to name a couple of contemporary examples.

And then there are movies that do have socially redeeming value even though they might contain scenes of murder, out of wedlock and/or gratuitous sex. It's not necessarily wrong to watch these movies.

If you mean 'watch with a discriminating eye', then it's okay.

*I* would think (this is my opinion) that if the part that is "against" your faith does not challenge YOUR faith - I mean your *personal* faith in your religion - then there is nothing wrong with it as long as it is actually short of being blasphemous (attacking God himself).

I also think that if the Roman Catholic Church felt that these movies were so wrong that they should be avoided by the faithful - in other words, that viewing them was an actual sinful act - that an **official** statement to that effect would be provided (as it was in the "good/bad old days").

The Index of Forbidden movies banished movies for just that reason and even for moral reasons in other christian persuasions.
